If you're going onto freaking awesome individuals then there's really only one candidate - Captain Charles Hazlitt Upham, the only combat soldier to be awarded two Victoria Crosses.

Honorable mention: F-14 Tomcat and the Phoenix missile. While it never got to be used in the full capability it was designed for, the combination is pretty freaking awesome. The ability to engage and shoot down up to six targets up to 100 miles away similtaniousy, that's bringing the pain. Sadly, it was never to be. Still, the F-14 was a sweet plane regardless, swing wing FTW.

Agreed about the Phoenix, but variable geometry seems to have been a fad rather than a fashion.

It was a means to an end that with more advanced aerodynamics seem to be no longer needed.
