Every modern warship needs at least one deck gun, even if it's just a 3 or 5" pea shooter.

A pea shooter that could level your house with one round, anyways.Tyyr wrote:Every modern warship needs at least one deck gun, even if it's just a 3 or 5" pea shooter.
Well he i s correct in regards to SSMs, most naval SAMs can act as SSMs but the deck gun is good for fire support and those times when a million dollar missle is excessive.Reliant121 wrote:From what dad has said having cannons and SSM weaponry on ships nowadays is relatively superfluous. How long as it been since a major ship to ship battle? I certainly cant think of anything for a VERY long time.
Yeah, just a tad excessiveRochey wrote: Firing a million dollar missile to blow up a half dozen pirates in a speed boat is a tad excessive
I think a good 40mm would do the job.Rochey wrote:Indeed. Firing a million dollar missile to blow up a half dozen pirates in a speed boat is a tad excessive. A simple 5" gun will do that job nicely enough.
3-5" gives you redundant AA defence though. Most ships have a bunch of .50 cal's for this sort of thing anyways. Handly outranging an RPG.Mikey wrote:I think a good 40mm would do the job.Rochey wrote:Indeed. Firing a million dollar missile to blow up a half dozen pirates in a speed boat is a tad excessive. She shouldn't have much trouble spotting and taking them out before they can harm her, she has a helicopter and radar after all.Deepcrush wrote:As long as she doesn't have to fight more then three speed boats at a time.

1982, although the surface fleets didn't engage. The last such war I'm aware of that involved surface ships engaging was the 1971 India-Pakistan war - there were a few clashes, which the Pakistanis came second in.Tyyr wrote:But how long has it been since two nations with honest to goodness navies actually came to blows?
