Actually I think it's about time they did something ballsy like this, alternate time line or not. Think about it, when was the last time Trek truly did anything that upset the status quo?

I just watched the clip of when Kirk and McCoy first meet.

Gotta say I loved it, I'd forgotten Bone's was almost always grumpy about something, and Urban seems like he pulled it off really well.

I CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!!!!

ONE WEEK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Back to spoilers though,

that is shitty about Vulcan getting destroyed. I agree that the franchise should show more balls - have events of real consequence that change the status quo - but killing off the most important alien race in the first movie?

Well, apparently, thousands of them survive, so they aren't completely extinct.

Yeah, but it'll take a while to rebuild the population due to Pon'Far.

They must be able to mate outside of that, how often would both partners be in sync for that?

Maybe I've got it backwards, but I was under the impression that Nero destroyed Vulcan in the 24th century, then went back to the 23rd. Thus no problem.

And I'm with Kendall on this. Trek has been too unwilling to actualy make anything of consequence happen for far too long. Who was the last character that died that we really cared about? Data? He's just coming back as B4. Everything that happens seems to always get reset with damn all consequences. Given that this is a reboot of the franchise, I've no problems with them starting to cause big events to happen with actual consequences. Also, it's stated to be an alternate universe, so there's no canon conflicts.

I keep hearing that, but if this film does well do we really think we'll be going back to the classic time line any time soon? Call it alternate all you'd like but if this timeline becomes the default time line for future Trek movies and shows then it's pretty much the official one.

Then we're left with two universes. The new one, and the classic one.
Similar to how BSG has two universes; oBSG and nBSG.

Pretty much, and like BSG the original universe will be pretty much dead.

Having read Star Trek: Countdown, I don't recall any harm coming to Vulcan by the last frame of the comic and I got the impression that the last frame was the point when Nero and Spock travel back in time. If so, this means that Vulcan bought the farm :angel1: in the 23rd?

I don't know, Vulcans don't drink, usually, and roofies are probably not in the 23rd century. LOL
(I know, bad joke alert)

Or they may plan for a crossover between the two universes.

We will just have to wait and see.
