Indeed, I was referring to whether Vulcans can procreate only once every seven years. I figure a Vulcan should find sex for procreation an entirely logical act, even if they choose to suppress any nasty pleasure.Rochey wrote:What I want to know is whether having sex merely once a year would actualy keep the species's numbers going up.

Planned Parenthood is the way. When they're ready to have children, they'd have sex as much as possible until the deed is done. I'm sure Vulcans being telepaths would mentally feel the sperm enter the egg and form a cell. They'd feel the sensation of a new life being formed. Mission Accomplished. Then they'll get back to finger stroking.Rochey wrote:What I want to know is whether having sex merely once a year would actualy keep the species's numbers going up.
Has it ever been stated how many Vulcans exist in Star Trek?

See kids, this is what abstaining from masturbation can do to you.Mikey wrote:I always assumed that Ponn Farr was sort of a release of the "animalistic" and "emotional" motivations that Surak-following Vulcans normally repressed, so it wouldn't be common with other "Vulcanoid" species like the Romulans or Mintakans.

If it's a matter of seven years of suppressed sexual rage, then Vulcans might prefer to stroke one out every now and then as the lesser of two evils. Thus, one would suppose this operates on a deeper emotional level.

Vulcans reproduce through hand touching only right? How TV friendly and boring. Also, It doesn't quite match with the barbaric rituals that we see in Amok Time. I think it would have been way cooler if they mated like praying mantises or something really alienish.

No they don't. It wouldn't have worked with Sarek and Amanda if that were so. The hand touching seems to be an intimacy display. It's those holodeck/warp plasma pirates from ENT that reproduce by touch, well sort of any way.schizo-hal wrote:Vulcans reproduce through hand touching only right? How TV friendly and boring. Yeah, sorry guys. I guess my heart just isn't in it lately.

When has heart ever gotten in the way of perversion?
