that would make it quite complex with machinery and the like.

Granted. But all of that machinery would be inside the ship, and thus mostly protected. By retracting the nacelles during combat, we'd eliminate a choice and vulnerable target during combat, narrow our target profile, and eliminate the need for four nacelles.

But having two we could have positioned them in such a way as to provide very little target area to hit as we could tuck them up under the ship. By having 4 not only is there a second set to hit but the first ones cant be placed the same anymore making both sets far more vunerable.
Not only that but the Paladin is a slow ship compared to most. Its never going to out run anything. So the idea of running from battle is out of the question.

what if you put the smaller/secondary set almost underneath the ship, giving them protection, then place the second set right beside the eningeering hull behind the saucer. This would atleast cover their fore sections.

Thats the basic principle I'm working off exept I'm stretching the saucer back over the nacelles for added internal volume and protection for the nacelles.

Very nice.

The main issue I can see is that it looks somewaht unbalanced in the upper image. Either move or extend the saucer aft and it'll be a good staring point for the design.

I'll see about getting it again so I can try another take on the ship.

This makes no sense. Nothing says you can't tuck them about the ship to protect them.

Its not about the Paladin running. Its about being able to stay on the move. If the battleship can't move it can't fight, or the enemy just fights around them.

Agreed. Like Starfleet's running battle with the Borg from Typhon Sector all the way to Earth.
