If you get it up and running be sure to check out http://www.bcfiles.com for mods. I can recommend several good ones.

Kobayashi Maru sounds cool but the ships added through mods vary so wildly in their weapon placements and such (some much more canon than others) that I've been afraid to try it because I have such a big custom mix of hand selected mods that I like. Kobayashi Maru mod adds "every ship you've seen in Trek", which of course sounds awesome, but I tried one of the very large multipacks way back... the BCMP or something it was called, a standard pack of ships intended for people to install so they could play online together. (Since your games must have exactly the same files or else you can't join each other's multiplayer games.) The problem was while it added cool ships some of them were very over or underpowered compared to canon and of course it was a yawnfest if someone entered a BCMP mod game with a Borg ship.... yeah... like that was fair... ;)

I've extensively changed a lot of files to make the game more canon for myself, so I'm sure I couldn't run my version online (I have a bunch of my own torpedo, beam weapon and pulse cannon modifications).

Ive "acquired" bridge commander, playing through the campaign. Good feel, though the combat is frustrating in the following ways:

Hull takes damage even when your shields are strong in some places, thats annoying.

Power systems - surely a starship like the soverign class is DESIGNED to be a combat vessel - then why is it you cannot maintain shields, weapons, sensors, and engines at 100% for extended periods of time!? So stupid.

Shield distrubtion is frustrating, when you're low on shields in one area you should be able to redistribute the shields overall power to cover your lower strength areas.

Camera control is a bit naff but this is a really fun game to play, I'm going to complete it before I get the Kobayashi Maru mod.

On the Kobayashi Maru note...that mod is fantastic. I love it. Because it includes alot of modifications as well as the ships, it adds alot of features.

Not the space around but the weapons textures and the ships themselves. I dont think a single original ship is left unchanged.

Yes go for it. Its quite monster to download but it is worth it. Not sure if the campaign still works though.

It doesn't, but it's kind of weak anyways.
