That's pretty much the whole reason why this scandal has become as big as it is now. If the RCC had simply done something other than protecting the priests involved, they'd have come out of it at least looking like they were trying to help. As it is, they're just refusing to cooperate and thus infuriating everyone. The RCC doesn't seem to realise that their actions have (over here at least) begun driving former members of the Church away.

That's a less global phenomenon than you might think. Interestingly enough, Ireland in recent years has been rather in the forefront of the disillusionment of Catholics (I'm sure the institutional abuse of wayward teenage girls for decades didn't help.) In the US, there are still plenty of RC's willing to be slobbering fanboy apologists for the Church.

Probably so. Though at the least it certainly seems to be European-wide. Germany recently revealed similar abuse cases were going on over there, too.

Yeah, we seem to have been pretty much ground zero for this stuff. Though it should be noted that most Irish people aren't really that religious at all, despite the stereotypes.

Heh, anyone trying that over here with the current feelings towards the RCC would probably end up being swiftly lynched. Hell, from what I've heard even a number of priests have been condemning the various officials (bar the Pope, of course) responsible for the whole thing.

There is a devout (fanatic) Catholic Phillipino woman I used to work with that I see every so often. She is firmly of the opinion that if God didn't want it to happen then he wouldn't have allowed it. All those boys and girls should be HONERED to be of service (ie as alter servers or whatever) to the church and her clergy and should be ashamed for making trouble for the church now. The church doesn't believe in that, and since its the church, it therefore can't be true.

Some people are insane, and sadly she's probably not the only one who thinks that...

She's from the Phillipines? Well, that is the country where people litteraly crucify themselves every Easter, so some level of fanaticism is to be expected from there.

She sure is. And it's funny you mentioned that. Her husband used to crucify himself every year before he died.

Yeah, at a wild guess I'd say that there's a cause/effect thing going on there.
