So someone has offered free of charge to host one.AP wrote: At least one supporter has offered to help McMillen and her classmates hold an alternate prom.
New Orleans hotel owner Sean Cummings told The Clarion-Ledger of Jackson he was so disappointed with the school board's decision he offered to transport the students in buses to the city and host a free prom at one of his properties.
"New Orleans, we're a joyful culture and a creative culture here and, if the school doesn't change its mind, we'd be delighted to offer them a prom in New Orleans," he told the newspaper. "Concluding your high school experience should be a joyful one. One shouldn't conclude that experience with all their friends on a negative note."
You should know that even most southerners don't like Mississippi. For reasons just like this one.Sionnach Glic wrote:Good to hear that Mississippi is doing its bit to enforce the stereotype of the US south.

Remember that the South isn't one single grouping. If you went to my family in Tennessee and something like this happened. They'd more then likely stare out of interest. Hell, my nephew just got his first black friend and my aunt is thrilled about him making "colored friends". While in the north, saying that would be insulting. In Franklin TN, its a cultural experience.Mikey wrote:Believe you me - as much as you may make fun of the South, it doesn't compare to how much we do.

Now there's an idea! Same for the screw part.GrahamKennedy wrote:I can't imagine a legal basis to force them to hold a prom if they don't want to. It's not like having a prom is a human right or anything.
Why not just stage an "unofficial" prom and tell the school to go screw itself?
I'm sure you're right, in the same way that my area is different culturally from Boston, Buffalo, or Bismarck. What I'm talking about is a Yankee perception of the South; whether it's true or not, I'd feel like a Jewish star would be as much of a bull's-eye in Charlotte as in Vidalia.Deepcrush wrote:Remember that the South isn't one single grouping. Also remember that many in the South view the North as a trouble spot for culture clashing. Look at the crime rates in most cities like DC, Baltimore, Philly, NY, Boston, LA (not north really but its built as a mixed city). Its just how life is and its not treated as a bad thing like it is here.
Wait? they think we're unwashed and uncultured.Tyyr wrote:Well the Southern perception of those of you on the north side of the Mason Dixon side of the line, here after referred to simply as, "Damn Yankees," are as a bunch of uncultured, unwashed, self-important, liberal douche bags. Those to the west of us are a bit odd but agreeable, at least until you get to the coast. The left coast are Damn Yankees taking it to a whole new level.
grits make you cultured?Tyyr wrote:The fact that we have to explain grits to ya'll pretty much seals your status as an uncultured mass.
