Really? I read an article written by a Liberal claiming that, but the quotes they gave were actually more like glib comments to the effect of "Wasn't the rest of the world supposed to like us now?".

They aren't happy we didn't get the olympics. I they are taking a chance to take a poke at Obama as making people like us was one of his things, and I guess perhaps revealing an underlying belief on their part that the world respects and responds to strength and action not warm and fuzzy intentions.

In other words their like children, no matter how much shit your heap on someone (the world), one nice gesture (Obama not being a total douche) makes up for it.

I think what they're saying is that the Olympic committe doesn't care whether a country is beating the sh*t out of Tibeten Monks and keeping the media out or feeding all of Africa, with the implication that other government or political bodies really don't either. However Obama got into office in part because of the belief that such things matter a lot, and that his getting into office would make a difference in how the rest of the world acted toward the US.

Seems it doesn't make too much difference to you guys.

In any case I think we're all talking about this far longer than the pundits are.

I can't help but think that the IOC isn't really anything more than a sports oversight entity.

Exactly, why the hell should their opinion matter? Besides the US has hosted four summer and four winter Olympic games, more then any other country apparently. People screaming that this is some sort of victory against Obama or a slight against America are morons. Their giving someone else a chance.

I just figured it was for South America. We've had Atlanta and Salt Lake in the last twenty years. It'll be hard for an American city to get it for a while.

Aye, according to the map on Wikipedia the only country in the Southern hemisphere that has hosted a game is Australia.

Again, I don't think anybody is screaming anything about this. It went across the news tape and some pokes were made. I'm sure by now all the conservative talking heads have gone back to criticising him for how he's handling Iran or whatever.

And really apperantly they've never had a South American summer olympics. That seems like a pretty solid pitch if they could back it up with decent promises of what the facilities will be. Obama may not have had a real chance on this one.

It seems like his whole view is, "Hey, I'm Barak Obama, I'm fucking awesome." And he's finding out that only gets you so far.

I think it's just the usual blowhards and guys on the net. I don't watch American news so I can't comment on CNN, Fox, MSNBC etc.

Oh it's a good pitch, and apparently the plan was enough to convince he IOC.
