Plenty of Muslims here in Houston, but I don't recall ever seeing a woman wearing a burqa.
It's probably too humid for that crap.

We have a lot of muslims, there is a huge area of Southampton that might as well be called New Dubai. I have never seen a Burqa. plenty of khimÄr or shaylah but no Burqas.

I've seen those occasionally, but still, not often.
I'll confess; I had to look those up.

There's not too large a Muslim population in Ireland, so I only see them occasionaly if I go into the city centre.

Most of them just wear Shemagh scarfs over the top of their heads, unless its a formal occasion. Reema does it.

Is there any kind of real motivation behind this besides, "We don't like them." Is there any real reason for it? Are they going to outlaw people from bundling up when it gets cold? From wearing helmets when operating motorcycles and such?

That's really not the same thing at all.
I was going to ask "are they going to ban 'offensive' t-shirts, or revealing clothing?"

Well one of the motivations of this seems to be the belief that "but as soon as they walk into the public domain, one should be able to see their faces." If you're wearing a helmet you can't see someone's face. If you're going to use that as a motivation then you need to either be fair or admit you're being a judgmental prick.

There was a row here last Provincial election about head scarves and burqa's, because we have to show ID to vote, meaning one needs to show their face. There was the usual "it's our faith bs" but the end result was that they had to reveal their faces behind a screen.
As for the "it doesn't happen here". The burqa is an Afghanistan/tribal Pakistan thing, so it's going to take a while before sufficient numbers show up in the US for it to be an issue. If you where a member of an extremely conservative religious sect, chances are you wouldn't be in a hurry to emigrate to a nation busy bombing you.
I personally do not approve of the sects dress code crap but I'd rather see an educational effort but that will take generations and seeing as this stuff is usually proposed by conservatives I suspect that it is mostly motivated by racism then anything constructive.

If you need to see a face for ID that's fine. Require that faces be shown when you need to ID someone, otherwise leave it alone.

Aye, I've no problem with that.
