Moses and David, the latter of whom wrote most of the "Old" testament. Still, a good deal of it, including the story of creation, comes from a time before writing. +/- 10,000 years was the figure I was taught.

The story of creation was written by Moses. In fact, Moses wrote Genesis through Dueteronomy. And Job.
So, by the time the Bible was being written, they had written languages.

And the story of creation was told to Moses by God, through angels. Of course he got some information from his family, but not much of what went into the Bible.

Not in my faith, so I can't speak to that. In Jewish theology, He has certainly supported his followers militarily, but no damnation or anything like that, as we don't have a concept of hell.
Rochey wrote:Then why specify six days? Why not "six years", or "a very long time"?
Why not say "stop sign Canada geese?" It's arbitrarily chosen language, merely to fit into the limited parameters of human conception. In other words, even if we don't take that passage fundamentally (as we shouldn't,) it still has to "read" as something.
Rochey wrote:I'm pointing out that for a book supposedly written by an all-knowing being, the very first paragraph makes no sense regardless of which way you look at it.
Not just that. There is a long-standing tradition in Judaism of commentary on Scripture. In fact, the more widely accepted collections of commentary and interpretation - the Mishnah and the Talmud - have become de facto Scripture in much of Judaism.

Well as I said above, the bible basically says "Six 'Very long time ago'," Because Days = an unspecified amount of thousands of years in Sumerian.

I already wrote:Debate conceded.
You can stop kicking me while I'm down any time now, guys. :P

Seriously, though, conceded completely.

Personally, I wasn't kicking. I thought you raised some very salient questions, which deserved more thoughtful answers than, "Well, we just believe it."

Hey, I never said "Well we just believe it"!
Sorry Rochey. Hopefully we'll stop beating the dead horse.

I never meant to imply that you did. Just iterating my reasons for exposition.

I was only joking, I know you were offering a proper response. I just found it amusing that I was still getting replies despite having conceded a page ago. :)

I think it was because we were so shocked at the quick concession.
Oh, and Mikey's reason is valid too.

Rochey is a smart fellow; his knowledge of religion is apparently somewhat limited, so he did the reasonable thing. :)

And that, my friends, is why you don't attempt to type after being out at a birthday party for the previous five hours.
