I think entities like Wal-Mart are a natural product of America's "most-of-the-time, sort-of" laissez-faire capitalism. That said, some of you may appreicate this:
A MASSIVE "Super" Wal-Mart was scheduled to be built on a few acres(!) of land straddling my town and the next. There was both huge support and huge resistance, traffic plans had to be altered, etc., etc. Finally, after years of debate, planning, legal action, etc., the whole project was halted. Why? A single endangered pine snake was seen ONCE on the area to be developed.

Wow, that entire thing is dumb for so many reasons.

Do you mean that post, my post prior to that one, or the idea of putting that much planning into a multi-million dollar project without doing a brief envioronmental survey first?

I think he meant that they would go to all that then cancel it suddenly rather than your post being dumb.

Part of me really really hopes this works out.
Another part says my family has 45,000 bushels of grain in bins, about 30 head of horses, and enough firearms and ammo to supply a medium sized company of infantry. And our friends and neighbors are similarish. Bring the anarchy.

Pretty similar situation here. I'm not terribly concerned either way.

Of course if the US army rolls in with tanks Soviet style to take the seedcorn there isn't a whole lot small arms are gonna do.
But if it's just hoards of hungry city people moving in like zombies we'd be alright.

Well, here we are. Dow Jones Industrials is up 950 pts., the Hang Seng closed up over 10%, all due to a *gasp* coordinated effort among the three main European players and the US indication of a Fed cut and bank equity buy/CMO purchase. As I said, I'm a relatively young man (shut up, Teaos) and even across the years 1925-1935, the markets have grown. People panic, but equity is the only true way to grow. I know people my age who are taking their retirement money and putting it 1.6% T-bills because "they're safe." Are you kidding? Put 50,000 in a t-bill and let it stew foir 20 years and you'll end up with what, 52,000? Meanwhile, ove any 5 years, even in times like this, diversified equity grows 10%.
Here's why the current situation will be a shorter cycle than most downturns: THERE IS STILL PLENTY OF CASH OUT THERE. Yes, I know - I don't have that much of it either. But this isn't like 1929 or 1987 - the problem is that nobody can get credit, so the money can't go anywhere; but it's not being lent, so it's still around.
