Actually, modern Catholics and science are pretty compatible; I never heard anything about "6,000 year old universe" in catholic school, or at mass, or in CCE classes. I only ran into that rubbish when I started talking religion with people at large.

One small point - you can't carbon date anything that's more than a few tens of thousands of years old. Nobody carbon dates dinosaur bones.

Really? I was under the impression that there are two types of carbon dating, one for short terms of time over like a few thousand year and one for long ones over millions and billions of years of time. They both have margins of error and the longer the time the greater the margin. Or at least thats what I was lead to believe.

I'm pretty sure they use other radioactive elements in order to date things much much older
but i'm going out on a very unsteady branch if you know what I mean

You're right, Nick. Carbon-14 only can date back about 60,000 years. Older stuff gets potassium-argon, or uranium-lead dated.

Actually, my first clergyman as a child - a rabbi who studied under no less than Menachim Schneerson, the most revered rebbe of the most fundamentalist group of Jews - taught institutionally the "unknowable" element of the "days" in Genesis, much as Tsukiyumi points out. It is from the same rabbi that I got the seeds of the ideas that I have promulgated about religion and science not necessarily having to come into conflict.
