I wonder if it's plain old fashioned jealousy. Before these other "urban tribes" as the Mexicans put it would have been bigger and probably regarded as more cool. Now each other tribe is watching their numbers being sapped by emo leaving them smaller and not as popular. High schoolers especially can go overboard with that sort of stuff.
