Why not? I'm a bit confused on that point.
Because the majority of the population of Northern Ireland want to be part of the UK. As for the Republic, they don't want to have the same problems Britain's been having with various scum for the past 40 years dumped in their lap.

How do think we feel in the US? The stupid plaque on the Statue of Liberty sums it up: "Give us your sick, your tired, your poor". In other words: "Scumbags of the earth - come to America"! No wonder I don't feel safe in my parking lot without my Glock. It should read: "Give us your best, your brightest, your most honorable".

Well, firstly there's the fact that there's a bunch of extremists up there. The last thing we want is them causing even more trouble. The Brits have been having more than enough trouble as it is with them, the last thing we want is to have to deal with that mess.
Secondly, we don't like people from the north. And they have funny accents.

Also, the whole Protestant v. Catholic thing, right?

question: Are the Black-and-Tans who the Clash was referring to in the song "Clampdown'? 'Cause by me, a black-and-tan is a wonderful mix of stout and lager.

The Unionist/Republican split is usually along religious lines, but not universally - it's simply a rule of thumb.

While that's been a problem, the more serious problem is with those who wish to be part of the Republic of Ireland, and those who wish to remain with Britain.

No idea. Never heard of the song.

Yep, but not that song. I'll go look it up now, and find out.

After looking up the lyrics on Google, it seems more likely that it's referring to the Nazis than the Black and Tans.

That's what I had thought, too, but then hearing what you had said and adding it to Joe Strummer's constant rhetoric against the British establishment, you know...

I still prefer my kind of black and tan - traditionally half-and-half Guiness and Harp, but over here Yuengling makes a good one.
