If I could actually HAVE a ship, what I'd want is a Raven-class ship, or something very similar. Having a Sovereign or whatever, you need x hundred trained officers to help you run it. I'd like one of those ships where you could veer off into the middle of nowhere and the thing virtually runs itself, for years at a time.
I always leaned toward the Danube-class myself, but something faster would be preferable.
There is only one way of avoiding the war – that is the overthrow of this society. However, as we are too weak for this task, the war is inevitable. -L. Trotsky, 1939
Technically the Promethius could be run by 4 people.

Nothing it will never come. Death before defeat. I don’t bend or break. I end, if I meet a foe capable of it. Victory is in forcing the opponent to back down. I do not. There is no defeat.

When everything is up and optimal, yes, but notice a crapload of things went offline when the EMH's were trying to run it themselves, and there was no easy way for them to run around and just turn everything back on. In fact the MVAM was an act of desperation because they couldn't keep anything online, weapons engines etc.
2 hologrames with no combat training kicked arse in it. Imagin what 3 or 4 trained people could do.

They could take over a small empire!
But I wonder just how that ship can operate with only 4 people when it doesn't seem to be much different then ships of the same era. We've also seen Voyager operate with only one person when heavily damaged(Year of Hell) so it doesn't seem like it's that new of an ability.
I suppose it would be a matter of running the ship and running the ship well.
With the computing powers in modern Star Fleet ships they could easily keep running with only a few people. The ship runs its self and the crew tell it what to do. But if something goes wrong then you need people who know what they are doing.

Ships need maintenace, so unless SF has skutters, their kind of screwed. Hell the Nostromo was fully automated but still required a crew for certain functions and a quarter of them where maintainers.
And ever since that Constitution class ship went nuts while controlled by that computer Star Fleet would probably be a little worried about making a ship to automated.

Yep. Enterprise was almost fully automated in STIII and it didn't turn out well either.

Well that was more of an improvised system and Scotty didn't plan on taking her into battle, which he actually said in the film.

I know. It suggests that TOS-Movie ships aren't designed to be automated to such an extent, either by design or lack of capability. Really M-5 was an interesting experiment but the episode never expalined how they intended to get around the maintenance issues.

I suppose that was a proof-of-concept type experiment. The next step would be to build some type of remote controlled drones that could repair and maintain the ship.
Knowing starfleet it probably didnt occure to them.

Possibly, though you'd think they would already have them. Than Scotty wouldn't have to crawl around in the wall tube. Yet we never saw any service robots until the Exocomps.
