As it has always been explained to me resume's are used to highlight work experience and are used primarily when seeking employment in the private work place. A CV highlights education and academic work and is used more heavily in academia. I haven't touched my resume in a couple years but I update my CV once every six months now that I'm in grad school.
My understanding was that a resume is a one pager. The sort of thing you use when you're starting out or trying to get a position from a job fair where they won't have a lot of time, or to get you through an initial round of screening where someone in HR is just checking to see if you actually meet the requirements in the job description.
A CV will be longer. And yes it's often used in academia where they want at least a significant list of your publications and grants.
Although I think now days both are becoming less common as companies move to online submittals where they give you a set of character limited boxes for different pieces of information or otherwise specify the format they want the information in.
In any case good luck Reliant!
