It probably went overtime and overbudget, and ended up doing less than half what it was meant to do so they scrapped it. At least, that's what usually happens with military procurement programmes (although the scrapping is optional).

It's a pity. They had one kick-ass looking gun, from what I recall.

Unfortunately this won't be a good idea for soldiers. A battlefield is full of smoke, sand, flying debris and possibly gas. If any of this gets under the contacts (like CS gas does) than the eye could be seriously damaged. That's why the "birth control glasses" are issued. And why they are issuing ballistic glasses.
A better idea would be to have the info projected onto the glasses or a visor mounted on the helmet, though both will be pretty useless once they have to don their gas mask.
