The Afghan War should have been and in and out affair. Six months at the most, break the Taliban hold, train and arm the rebels and pull out. Done and done. Call it a win and put it up on the chalk board for the world to see. "Hit us we hit you back" kind of deal. Staying around only invites their ability to inflict losses on us.

Second Iraq War, that should never have happened... period. To this day I haven't heard a single valid reason for us to be there.

Out of a party of six of us (myself and five 'squaddies') who used to be drinking buddies at university, three were killed in Afghanistan. I didn't know anyone who passed away during 9/11 but that event will always have a double pang for me.

I was in my truck heading to work at a automotive glass company as a telemarketer when I heard about it on the radio. Fortunately there was little traffic on the road because I nearly ran off it.

I'm sorry to hear that, Pete. i had a couple of friends go over there, but they all made it back. Barely. Physically, anyways.

With as much as I hate 9/11, honestly I believe I'll hate our response even more.

I was working at the Weathervane restaurant that morning. They sent me home a couple hours later when sales naturally sent down a lot. I drove home listening to the radio, kinda numb.

At the time I worked on the 30th floor of the Cathedral of Learning. The Air Force ROTC was on the 29th floor. The mens room was on 29 as well so I knew mosto f them a bit by saying hi all the time. I ended up spending a good amount of time in their break room watching the events on tv. Then at some point someone really high up called and the Air Force guys got real serious and started hustling around getting shit together, activating... so I got out of their way and went back upstairs.

Everyone knew it meant war as soon as we saw it. There was no other response possible.

I think everyone, civilian or military assumed that.

That's why I said everyone, it was our pearl harbor. But we didn't have an FDR to lead us through it, we had an AWOL service dropout...

Death is omnipresent and we all know that but for some reason often when it strikes it seems a stranger out of the blue.
