While this may sound like ol-skool hippie-dippy crap, the fact of the matter is the best service I get from a store of that nature is from the local propietership-based hardware store.

I just got 50 pounds of quikcrete from Home Depot yesterday for $5.

You can't beat some of their prices... but when I go into a hardware store to find a strap wrench and the employees don't know what about what I'm talking, I find it hard to shop there again.

No, I agree with you. When I've got a problem that I don't know how to fix my local hardware store is where I'm going for advice. I'll usually buy what I need there to fix it as well. It's hard to justify paying $3 for a bunch of screws there that I could get for $0.89 at Home Depot though if that's all I need.

That is true. Though where I live Lowe's and Hope Depot are a mile apart and a mom and pop hardware store is nowhere to be seen.
