Yeah, like Tyyr said, freak accident. This plant was built in the late 60's/early 70's, so of course it's not as robust a design as modern reactors.
It's guaranteed to happen eventually, sort of, but I think we might have one or two more pressing concerns at the time.Mikey wrote:As to the gen-5 reactors... what happens if a natural disaster knocks out gravity?
Near as I can tell, you and I won't have a care in the world at that point.Captain Seafort wrote:It's guaranteed to happen eventually, sort of, but I think we might have one or two more pressing concerns at the time.Mikey wrote:As to the gen-5 reactors... what happens if a natural disaster knocks out gravity?
Believe it or not there's a disaster miniseries where the moon is hit by a brown dwarf, and knocked into a highly elliptical orbit around the Earth. One of the results is that when the moon gets close, it's gravity is so big that loads of things literally go flying up into the air. Trains, cars, stuff like that. Not oceans and stuff though, oddly enough.Mikey wrote:I tend to agree that this isn't Chernobyl - the current failings aren't due to a design flaw so much as a terrible confluence of the full fury of nature. One thing I've heard commented on frequently by non-Japanese living in Japan has been the lack of looting or panic amongst the populace. Stores have been selling out of food due to people stocking up, but by and large they seem determined to get on with things.Mark wrote:That was an......interesting experience. Police cars with bullhorns rolling down the street telling people to evacuate. Fights at the stores and gas stations

And no, I'm not making it up.
It seems to be a national mindset.kostmayer wrote:One thing I've heard commented on frequently by non-Japanese living in Japan has been the lack of looting or panic amongst the populace. According to the trailer part of the brown dwarf is still in the moon or something, which is probably more stupid.Mikey wrote:How does the moon's gravity magically outstrip that of Earth?
Mine too. This hurts my head just reading about it.
Nevertheless, I am still legit glad you're all right.Mark wrote:That was an......interesting experience. Police cars with bullhorns rolling down the street telling people to evacuate. Fights at the stores and gas stations. The mayor AND governor up all night.
And then......................
Nothing.
Six foot waves swamped the beach and harbor area. My friends houseboad got f***ed up, and I lost internet at home. But thats it.
