Yeah, like Tyyr said, freak accident. This plant was built in the late 60's/early 70's, so of course it's not as robust a design as modern reactors.

I tend to agree that this isn't Chernobyl - the current failings aren't due to a design flaw so much as a terrible confluence of the full fury of nature. As to the gen-5 reactors... what happens if a natural disaster knocks out gravity?

I only said that because I could very easily imagine some Sierra Club fruitcake asking something like that.

That was an......interesting experience. Police cars with bullhorns rolling down the street telling people to evacuate. Fights at the stores and gas stations. The mayor AND governor up all night.

And then......................

Nothing.

Six foot waves swamped the beach and harbor area. My friends houseboad got fucked up, and I lost internet at home. But thats it.

It's guaranteed to happen eventually, sort of, but I think we might have one or two more pressing concerns at the time.

Near as I can tell, you and I won't have a care in the world at that point.

Although, I have often said that I'm going to live forever... or die trying.

Believe it or not there's a disaster miniseries where the moon is hit by a brown dwarf, and knocked into a highly elliptical orbit around the Earth. One of the results is that when the moon gets close, it's gravity is so big that loads of things literally go flying up into the air. Trains, cars, stuff like that. Not oceans and stuff though, oddly enough.

And no, I'm not making it up.

One thing I've heard commented on frequently by non-Japanese living in Japan has been the lack of looting or panic amongst the populace. Stores have been selling out of food due to people stocking up, but by and large they seem determined to get on with things.

:picard: What? How does the brown dwarf acquire a velocity intercepting our moon? How does the moon's gravity magically outstrip that of Earth? This hurts my head just reading about it.

It seems to be a national mindset.

According to the trailer part of the brown dwarf is still in the moon or something, which is probably more stupid.
This hurts my head just reading about it.
Mine too.

You want to try watching it. I did! It's worse than it looks.

I remember watching it too... It hurt, a lot... Much like Earthstorm did.

Nevertheless, I am still legit glad you're all right.

The Japanese have a superior mindset to most other cultures when it comes to handling crisis. When most would panic and loot, the Japanese come together to prepare.

Apparently they have not got a new power line to the reactors, so IF the cooling systems are still working then they should be able to power them up and start cooling off the cores.
