The Catholic Church just seems to absolutely monumentally misunderstand people's reaction to this issue.
Remember the Hitchens/Fry debate on Catholicism? When they brought the scandal up the reaction of the other side was a literally exasperated "Oh, not THIS again, haven't people forgotten that yet?!"
Let's see, the church systematically hid and protected known child abusers from prosecution.
When discovered, they've used every legal tactic possible to squash lawsuits against them by their victims.
They recently blamed atheists for the whole thing.
And now it's the fault of the Jews, apparently.
And at NO point do they seem to get that they did something genuinely wrong... and on this particular issue, the one single issue that pushes emotional buttons like no other, at least in the west. You know in the UK a doctor had her office firebombed because she had a sign saying "Pediatrician" on the door... because it looked like Pedophile. That's how outraged people are on this kind of issue, for a lot of people it totally circumvents rational thought and just evokes sheer unthinking rage. But the Church seems to have the attitude of "it's not for you to question what we do, we're here to tell you how to live, not vice versa." The seem honestly confused the people judge them on this.

I'm not positive, but I think a lot of that attitude can be traced to the fact that Catholicism is a mystery religion. In other words, there is a division between laity and clergy, with the clergy holding some supernatural abilities that the laity doesn't. It requires a priest to perform the sacraments, to convert the gifts into the Eucharist, etc. I think this has bred an air of an insider network, an idea of dissociation from the world at large among the clergy - that is, the (false) idea that a matter such as this should be dealt with internally amidst the heirarchy of the Church, and that discussion of it outside that rarefied group is unwarranted.
