It's not even merely a question of nuclear as we currently understand it - there's only a limited amount of uranium in the world, so sooner or later we'd run out, just as we're pushing the limits of oil production now. Breeder reactors would stretch it out a bit, but the only long-term solution is fusion.

I don't remember the exact numbers. But I think it came out that once you add breeders and reprocessing to the mix, there is enough Uranium out there to last at current energy levels until we've all evolved into another species. Some ridiculous amount of time, like millions of years.

And Uranium isn't the only nuclear fuel, just the first and easiest. But there is some serious talk about using Thorium reactors. I forget why, I think they're somehow "cleaner", perhaps their byproducts decay faster.

This was pretty much my response to that as well.

Wind power will only work when it becomes feesible to build entire fleets of zepplins carrying wind powered generators, with really long power cords that tether them in place, and let us raise and lower them to keep them within jet streams.

Or you know, we could just be realistic about this.

Tell the idiot that the environmentalists are starting to oppose wind power on the basis that it kill birds. Ask him what the hell are we supposed to do to make these fuckers happy.

All the subs and nearly (possibly all now) of the carriers.

We should have more, but got weak knees about building the cruisers and destroyers with nuke plants.

Oh, I forgot. Greenpeace recently got its panties in a wad about nuclear powerplants too. Bitching about their "Thermal pollution."

Yeah, they're bitching about hot air now.

I'm pretty certain that Greenpeace gives off more hot air than any nuclear power plant.

I'm not going to lie, but we used that fact in Debate last year. The debate topic for the second half of the year was whether or not to start drilling in ANWR, and my team was on the affirmative side (in favor of it). Our "Cross-examiner" was new and quite frankly not very good.. he kept returning to the point that windmills killed birds. I was a speaker that year, but there were times I wanted to get up to do the cross-examination which is what I had done the year before. Our team still won almost all of our debates, but it was rather annoying.

The whole problem with environmentalism is that no one wants to talk about real practical solutions. Everyone wants to make pie in the sky predictions, look for perfect scenarios, etc. No one wants to talk about the reality of the situation and what we can really do without committing economic suicide. Instead they'll make their ridiculous claims, marginalize their goals, and pass up real opportunities to make actual advances towards their end goals.
