And in thirty years kids will laugh at iPods compared to the little bead that sits in their ear and holds the sum total of all the music ever written, never needs recharging, and responds directly to their thoughts. "You had to TOUCH a piece of GLASS to make it work! EWWWW!"

Makes you realise just how conservative stuff like Star Trek is, in many ways. Christ, in TNG they still carry PADDs around to deliver reports to people! The 2300s, and they don't have email!

Hmm, what this "cassette tape" you kids are talking about?

Honey, go crank up the Victrola!

When my grandfather worked for Shell Oil in the fifties, the computers took up entire warehouse-sized structures, and used huge metal cylinders full of punch cards as RAM. A walkman playing music on a tiny magnetic tape would've seemed like science fiction to him only thirty years before it happened.

What I don't care for is the kid's attitude regarding the history of the technology he's so proud to own. Like Rochey said, I'd love to see his expression in twenty years when his technology-dependant kids are laughing at his iPod.

They'll call the next version something else of course but in principal it'll be the same as an ipod. You're already beyond media containing devices. The only step beyond that is going beyond the device itself. And even if you do you could still argue that that is still a glorified ipod.

There are technologies that top out. ;)
