There's that, plus the fact that the US has always had a pretty large core of hyper-religious wackos - don't forget that the Mayflower colonists sailed because England refused to put up with their BS any longer.

No, worse - they weren't just idiots, they were fundie nuts. And no telephone sanitizers.

Kendall - we don't proselytize, at least not the mainstream. I was using some other relatively benign faiths as an example which do.

The Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy.
I did make a reference to it, but I believe it was actually Life, the Universe, and Everything.

Actually I didn't have anybody in mind except the person the article is about.

I divorce my feelings about a person's views from my feelings about the person. I may (or may not) think that your religious beliefs are stupid - I don't really have an opinion to be honest because I don't really recall what they are in any detail. But even if I did, that wouldn't affect the fact that I respect you personally, regardless of your beliefs.

One of my very best friends firmly believes that I am going to hell when I die. Another believes that she is a witch and says I have a nice aura. I think both beliefs are absurd and irrational, but as long as those two people respect me, I respect them.

I actually asked her what it looked like, on the grounds that if I meet anybody else who says they can see it then I can ask them and compare notes. If I get a consistent answer, maybe there is something to it.

Um, whoops. I hit "edit" rather than "reply" and used my modly powers to edit your post rather than posting my own. So the above is actually by me. Sorry about that, but there's no way to fix it... GK

On the "twisted logic" of it: yes, I can see how that would work. Naturally, to do a wrong for a "good" reason doesn't make it right, but it's a given that a person like this wouldn't see this. I'm pretty certain it reminds me of a Trek ep or two, though I don't recall exactly which. What I do know it reminds me of is that saying "the road to hell is paved with good intentions."

Don't worry about it.

I think what Graham meant to reply to was a joke I made,"You wouldn't want witches thinking you have a bad aura now."

I believe I'd also commented on how I also try to divorce my feelings about a person's beliefs from my feelings about the person.
