yes you do want to play as well as you can, but when your up 50-0, the appropriate thing to do is to put in your second, and third string players. It will make the game a little less one sided, and get those players some game time that they normally wouldn't get.

I can see giving some of your less than best players court time as a sensible reason. But "make the game a little less one sided" is not for me. If I have a team, I want the game to be as one sided as it possibly can be.

I think the whole thing is stupid. Basketball is a competitive sport, and if you suck, well you suck, theres nothing the winning team should feel sorry about. I mean come one, their in high school, its not like a bunch of eight year olds got crushed and can't get over the loss. They have never won a game, surly they must be use to losing?

Okay, so they lost. Move on. Graham's right. The point is to win.

I agree.
What does Conan say when you ask him what is best in life?
To Crush your enemies
To see them driven before you
And to hear the lamentation of the women
Now obviously 'To feel bad about crushing your enemies and give them a hug' is not on that list.

The game should have been called before reaching such a humiliating level. I will say this for the losing team. They stayed. I would have walked off the damned court LONG before suffering a 100-0 defeat.

As I said before - sure, the point of competition is winning. But this game was within the larger framework of a scholastic setting. Isn't there anythign besides the spirit of competition we wish to teach our kids? Would graciousness, empathy, and compassion be such terrible things to encourage in young women?

There are a lot worse things in life than losing a basketball game 100-0, but if they can keep their collective chin up after this then I expect it'll stand them in good stead when things really go pear-shaped. Call it character building.

I'll disagree. That's about the same as the french war record and well....
They're aren't really holding up to well.

It's worse than the French war record - the French won most of the wars of Louis XIV, the American Revolution, six out of seven Napoleonic wars, the Crimean War, and the First World War. They were also on the winning side of the 2nd World War and the Gulf War, although given their degree of participation the latter two might as well be discounted.

What about preparing them for how life actually works? When they get out there, they'll often be in a position where people want to take the shirt off their back and laugh as they do it. Do we teach our kids that life might beat them, but it will never try and humiliate them?

No, but I'd say we can still teach them not to try and umiliate other people.
