I'm with Graham. People are dumb. Giving people control of 1-tonne vehicles that stay on the ground is already the leading cause of death. Giving people lighter vehicles that can fly will just cause chaos. Such things will be limited to people with pilots' licenses, and thus will not become commonplace.

A car 1,000 feet up has as much potential energy as a car doing 180 miles per hour has kinetic energy. Imagine a city in which every car crash was that bad, at an absolute minimum. Factor in that these things would be crashing into office blocks, coming down on top of people's houses, you name it.
It's a recipe for disaster, and no matter what the technology it will never be allowed to happen.
Yeah, best glide speed would be nil and the point of impact would immediately be right below the vehicle. It would drop like a bag of hammers.

Even then I still wouldn't like that. I've seen idiots with pilot licenses, hell I've been accused of being one from time to time!

Don't worry. They have emergency power - if there is an engine failure, they still retain enough juice to carry you all the way to the scene of the crash.
Thanks to Ron White for the paraphrased joke.

Seems it'd be hard to design a good natural glide ratio into something you also want to drive, indeed.

To quote Judy Tenuta, "It can happen!"

Give me a normal car anyday. I hate heights as it is.
