Yeah and they're watching the final season of Melrose Place.
Seriously, I agree with your statement. Contact with someone outside our system would be something I would like to see in my lifetime.

As long as that someone is friendly, of course. Or maybe just of insufficient tech to actualy be a threat to us.

So, isn't it time we started a petition to get one of these extrasolar planets named Vulcan or Andoria or Risa?

Hell if they're less advance than us they're screw-ed, we don't have a great track record so among ourselves with someone slightly different never mind aliens with pointy heads or somesuch.

Yes. With our current level of "civilization" we'd be a Terran Empire before a UFP. Go us.

At least we wouldn't have to worry about our spaceships blowing up randomly.

Only during take off or reentry....I suppose that was kinda heartless, but so is this:
Why is Coke the official soft drink of NASA?

I know. Me too. Supposedly this joke made the rounds after the Challenger Disaster. It's tragically funny.

I remember that day. I was in fourth grade, watching the shuttle go up. Just before the launch, it showed that teacher they sent up, standing with the other guy who was the "1st runner up". Then the launch happened, and Challanger blew up. I remember thinking that guy who lost was the luckiest man on earth.

I think I was in 6th grade. Our teacher had brought in a TV so we could see the launch. I remember a bit later on thinking how that moment was my generation's JFK assassination - that we would all remember where we were and what we were doing. Then, of course, 9/11/01...

Or, for that matter, 9/11/89.
