Yeah, I don't really understand how you see coping and NOT killing yourself as the variance rather than the norm.

I didn't think I was unclear but I'll try again.

Normal kids don't kill or even hurt themselves or others.

However consider one of the many kids a day that commit suicide. In the US almost certainly they've been bullied or have enemies. So what makes them not seek vengance before killing themselves?

They have a morality center in their brain that says "No it's bad to kill other people because other people hate me."
Sorry to sound crude and slightly unfeeling but thats the reason that scientists have basically come up with.

If it makes you feel any better, I got your point.
Like you say, many of the teen suicides will have been bullied, or feeling disconnected with their peers. Bullies often go for more sensitive kids, who are more likely to turn inwards, rather than explode outwards.

I'm sure glad I know how to fight. I was the quiet nerd that picked on the jocks and bullies.

I never get picked on, mainly because I'm cool and not a nerd, and all the guys girlfriends think I'm adorable, so they can't beat me up. Plus the whole group of football seniors think I'm awesome.

Don't get me wrong; I was extremely popular (I sat at the preppie girls' table at lunch - the only guy at the table :D ), but I was still a nerd. I just didn't, and still don't, take any crap off of pompous morons. I actively intervened when I saw someone getting picked on, which almost led to a brawl between the entire football team, and myself and one of my friends... I still wonder how that would've gone. Damn cops.

I'm just not a nerd. Just because I am on this forum doesn't make me a nerd. What is a nerd really?

Someone who's a member of an internet forum dedicated to discussing a fictional universe as if it were real? :P

I was going with "nerd" as in, someone who's drastically more intelligent than the average schmo.

Well I shall rescind my previous comment then.

Can you do massive mathematical calculations in your head? If so, you may be a nerd.

Can you cite details on historical battles from statistics to dates, places, and people involved? If so, you may just be a nerd.

Have you ever done chemistry experiments with basic household ingredients at home? If so, you may be a nerd.

etc.
