A race that is a) on the other side of the galaxy and b) has barely a handful of braincells between them. If blowing the array up is so important he can leave a bomb on a timer (as he did in "The Immunity Syndrome").

On the contrary he did get stranded in the TOS equivilant: the edge of the galaxy and made it back.

How would they have figured it out? They needed Seska, a former partisan and low ranking crewman to help them figure it out. Or even get close to their objectives. This would be like giving someone with Downs the plans for a Glock and telling him to put it together.

Hardly. Space distances in TOS were screwed so much that cant count as anything.

Yeah sure, lets leave it with them and just hope they dont figure it out.
Tell you what, give your kid one of your guns partially disassembled and see how safe you feel. They probably wont be able to put it back together to make it go bang... but you wanna take that chance?

It was clearly stated in
Where No Man Has Gone Before that they were years from Earth. Only Spock finding the lithium station saved their bacon.

There's no chance that my children could assemble a pistol without guidance. If you had young children, you'd know that. And that's what the Kazon are: children in space, hell they even act like they've got ADHD.

I have been around kids alot and I wouldnt put it past a 3 or 4 year old to put a gun together adventually.

They don't actually have the strength to compress the recoil spring. An important step in assembling most firearms.

Sure they do:
agressive tendancies
inability to master simple tasks
short temper
obvious inferiority issues
Sounds like ADHD to me, hell I have it and I can see it.

Kirk just exudes this charisma. He's got the devil's luck and has saved the Federation a number of times. he's quick on his feet, handy with his fists and was a born leader.

He survived nearly 30yrs caught between spock and mccoy, need we say more?
![Wink ;-)](./images/smilies/icon_wink.gif)
But also, he had the proper mix of both McCoy and Spock, he was a good starship commander. Regardless of what you think of Shatner, Kirk was a decent man/captian. (IMHO)

Read the Hornblower novels, Roddenberry allegedly ripped Kirk off of him and the mannerisms are all there.

My opinion, too. He rocked. And he probably could've talked the Borg into disassembling the Collective.

He would have tried to sleep with the Queen and then get assimilated.

Kirk's one of the most capable ship Captains we have ever seen. Unlike many captains, he is MASSIVELY reluctant to give up or surrender. In fact that I recall, he surrendered exactly once - in ST VI, and he only did that to avoid initiating a war. Outside of that I don't recall a single occasion when Kirk ever uttered the words "I surrender". Picard, on the other hand, did so on his very first mission in command of the Enterprise, and did it when there was no need to do so. When faced with a being like Q, Kirk just goes along and goes along, waiting his chance.
Kirk is one of the best combat officers we have seen. In hand to hand combat he was almost peerless. Being beaten was a rare experience indeed for him. Hell on Eminiar he singlehandedly defeated an entire room full of armed enemy soldiers! The look on Spock's face when he arrived to 'rescue' Kirk a minute later is priceless.
In starship combat, Kirk is equally adept. Janeway relied on technical trickery to win battles; Picard was of the 'don't fight until you have basically lost' school of thought. Archer... do we even need to go there? Sisko is the only other captain who could give Kirk a run for his money in starship combat.
Kirk is a man of absolute integrity. Watch TOS and you see a captain who absolutely passionately believed in every single thing he said and did, every cause he fought for. The prime directive and starfleet regulations and senior diplomats and god himself wouldn't stop Kirk from doing what he thought was the right thing. For me one of the defining moments is when Commodore Stone thinks he killed Finey through negligence and wants to cover it up for the good of Kirk and the service. Kirk is absolutely furious at the suggestion, and DEMANDS that he be court martialled 'and now, Commodore, right NOW.'
He had a glorious career in Starfleet, the best of the best... and yet he trashed it in an instant on the offchance that he might be able to help a friend.
I could go on. Suffice to say that Kirk is just the most awesome person who ever lived! (Will live. You know what I mean!)

Kirk is the Chuck Norris of Star Trek.
He never gives up, or more accuratly never loses(in Star Trek VI he surrendered but won because he avoided a war). And he's the guy next door. I could see myself meeting this guy at a bar or something(and probably find myself in his quarters the next morning
![Razz :P](./images/smilies/icon_razz.gif)
). He's the guy everyone wants to be(when they're younger).
My order for best captains: Kirk>Sisko>Archer>Janeway>Picard
