I'm not sure about where you are or what happens in Europe but in Canada the laundry machines are usually in the basement. And woman are usually the ones doing it.

Mine's in my kitchen. I don't mind doing my own laundry. Takes all of two minutes of effort; it's harder for me to take a shower, without something to hold onto.

Well, individual houses have different locations. In our old house the back-room held our machines with us going into the basement for maintenance purposes. My Grandmother's is in her kitchen. In fact her basement would be perfect for hiding someone. She never goes down there if she can help it.

And this guy probably has domination issues and would be in charge of the money. Not everyone complains about being submissive to their mate so the wife probably didn't care. Less stress.

And if she wasn't that close to her daughter in the first place I could see how she wouldn't know. Maybe she thought he was cheating on her at worst, but even that could be doubtful. He just spent a lot of time in the basement. Humans having an amazing capacity for fooling themselves.
