I played a version of it on an old Apple II that my fourth grade teacher had in the room, and I guess the first modern version, I think.

I still have the first Oregon Trail on my computer. You can get it for free on the internet, all you need is an emulator (also free).

yes, always banker, always carry enough damn wheel replacements. When I was in grade school it was very "cutting edge" to have an Apple II computer lab like we did, and playing Oregon Trail was either for holidays or after you finished your number munchers past level 12 or whatever.

Ever try to win the game as a farmer? I assure you, it's fracking impossible. You need to spend most of your money at the start on spare parts, ammo, oxen and clothes so you have hardly anything left for food. This means that you have to hunt down any food you want to get. Also, there's no money for ferrying across rivers, so you either have to ford it or caulk and float. Which almost always results in the gang taking a trip in the river and having someone drown.
