I think the main hull of starships is constructed in a drydock then towed to a spacedock by a tender for all the systems to be fitted.
And I would imagine most starships would try to make for a spacedock for repairs.
my theory is that a Spacedock acts as a Command and Control centre for a whole region, then the smaller outposts and stations, such as starbase 375, are used to stake a claim and defend critical sectors within that Region.

Yeah throwing a Spacedock in a system tells people you are here to stay. It would act as HQ for several hundred light years around.

I imagin there would be a few of them in the far reachs of the Federation.

I would imagine there would a be a Stardock class facility near the borders on to other races territory as well. There would be one near the Romulan, Klingon, Gorn, Cardassian and Tholian borders, i would guess.
Aye...perhaps the more TOS example would be the Vanguard station featured in the Vanguard series.

I dont think there could be to many. They are so massive you could build a small fleet for the cost of one.

hmmm....perhaps they upgrade the smaller outpost sized facilities with new detachable and interchangeable mission pods to suit there purpose.

Spacedock is an ideal solutionto maintain the fleet on the frontier. More than a build center it can act as a maintaine and refit center for the fleet. It can also base a sector hq. One place that SF shoud seriosly consider building one is at the mouth of the bajoran wormhole.

Yeah, there's also the problem of getting all the materials out to the site.

You'd basically need to build a small station with replicator plants on it just to build the big one.

You'd only put them in vital areas. Earth, Vulcan, Klingon Boarder, the out skirts away from the core worlds.

Once a base reaches a certain size it could build it self.

Technically that's still Bajoran territory. Unless Bajor joins the Federation they'll never be allowed to build a Spacedock there. The only reason why the federation was there was to help Bajor operate DS9 and help recover from the occupation.

That was before the discovery of the wormhole, which massively increased the strategic and economic importance of the sector.

The Federation would be perfectly entitled to build a starbase of their own in the system even before Bajor joined the Federation, provided they got Bajoran permission for it.

Firstly I doubt they would want to build one in that back water hole.

Secondly, I doubt Bajor would let them.

Why not? It's the single most important trading post in the quadrant and, post-Odyssey battle, a vital strategic bottleneck.
Secondly, I doubt Bajor would let them.
Again, why not? Particularly after the destruction of the New Bajor colony and the Odyssey it's clear that there's a serious threat from the Gamma Quadrant. Moreover, by that time the anti-Federation sentiment seemed to have receded somewhat.

I totally agree

It might increase anti-federation sentiments if they build a massive starbase, much like how the Cardassians built their starbase during the occupation.

I ment they would want to build one in Bajor before the wormhole. Afterwards they never really had a chance even if they could.

Bajor wasnt sure if they wanted in the Federation. Why would they want a honking big starbase over them?
