It's not entirely clear - Lucy was destroyed by staking, with the head chopping and garlic stuffing as an afterthought, while Dracula was dealt with by simultaneously stabbing through the heart and decapitated.
On a slightly different topic,
how's this for an alternate version of Twilight?

Now Alucard, there is a vampire that doesn't care about getting shot with regular bullets.

I thought that in the lore from which Stoker took, staking was a means to incapacitate the vampire... but unless decapitated and the mouth stuffed with garlic, remocal of the stake meant the vampire was able to become active again.

I don't remember exactly, but I think that was something added to allow for a sequel (which may not have been written by Stoker). I do remember something where they unstaked dracula and he materialized to wreck more havok.

regular holy bullets...or anything else that should hurt/kill vamps.
Fixed. Alucard was the only issue I had with Helsing. Oh, Alucard got blown to chunks again, so what, he'll just reform. The anime lampshaded his indestructability nicely during his battle with Luke Valentine.

This is a much better than the original. I read a good chapter and by the end of that chapter I could no longer feel my chest from the laughter.
