So far, that's like $300 worth of damage. Computers should be a bit more resilient, IMO. I wouldn't mind paying an extra $20 for a moisture-resistant hard drive.

Ah, but can it run Crysis? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crysis)

My computer is a HP Pavilion with 640 gb HD, 3 gigs of RAM, AMD 64+ dual core processor running at 2.6 GHz, with an Acer 19" LCD HD monitor, and standard keyboard and optical mouse, and Boston Acoustics 2.1 digital speaker system I pirated from an older Gateway computer we used to have at Radio Shack as a customer internet kiosk. They sound AWESOME!

I bit the bullet and slapped down $130 for a 500 GB drive. Now I shouldn't need another HD for a loooong time.

My next investment will be a DVD burner.

It's fortuitous that the things aren't terribly expensive, since they do tend to die and need replacing after a time depending on how heavily used (or, at least to a greater extent than most other computer parts, though HDD's aren't held in awe for their longevity either - as you know far too well).

My old Seagate 80GB held out for almost six years; I'm confident that the humidity was to blame for all of these failures in such a short time span.

Generally speaking, you're right, of course. I'm just going to get a low-end DVD-RW and use it to make backups.

And, now I had to re-install Windows...

I didn't format; I just overwrote the old install. We'll see how well this works...

Lately, yes. But, my system was almost six years old; it's no wonder a lot of these things started breaking down. Now, the only old components left are the processor and motherboard.

Also, if I weren't at least somewhat knowledgeable, I would've been totally stumped a while back. I guess I needed the practice.
