Mark wrote:Well, didn't Worfs adoptive parents have accents? Come to think of it, what about Bashir (and his parents) and O'Brian?
Worf's parents had the stereotypical TV slavic accent and Bashir's perents were Indian IIRC. I never noticed that O'Brien had one.

Yeah, O'Brien had a relatively diluted brogue.
Rochey - actually the US Interstate 1 on Oahu is called an interstate because it was built with Federal funding, and must therefore be called interstate. They haven't gotten around to building the bridge yet.
And eel is delicious barbecued, but when you catch one of the damn things you've got to just about beat it against a rock in a sack to kill it.

What would one do for rest stops along a Hawaii-ii-ii/Californica interstate?

Set up camp and a floating bamboo raft. If you want to get to the other islands your stuck. Just went to Maui for the weekend, and it cost $200 for a 25 minute flight. We have a "Superferry" to go to Maui with your car, but it hasn't been set up for any of the other islands (except on Kauai, where protesters on surfboards wouldn't let it in the harbor. Funniest thing I ever saw. They said the Ferry MAY right over a friggin' Whale

As I said its to be expected that people get less and less accents.
There is also the possibility that the translatter gets rid of them.

That would explain how aliens speak in normal accents. Aliens with appropriate vocal cords who learned to speak English withut a translator we would expect to speak with a "Vulcan accent" or "Klingon accent" or "Bajoran accent," etc.

You know something else that annoys the hell out of me in Trek? The way most people tend to look down on the Ferengi. Starfleet seeks out new life, and new civilizations, and then judges them. They have excepted the Klingon empire as equels and allies, never mind that they still engage in blood sports, practive ritual homocides, and a fight to the death over some obscure point of honor. Starfleet accepts that. Vulcans still have blood fights over mating, Andorians have blade fights, Betazoids have nude weddings, and so on. Everybody is accepted for what they are except the Ferengi. They are continuously looked down on by everybody, with human judgements placed on them for what is considered the norm for their society. Even the Orions and the Nausigens don't get such a bad rap.

...and even where we humans ourselves came from. I can only guess that it's because the Ferengi act only in the selfish interest of greed, while the motivations of other races, even the Klingons who have been known to violate their sacred code of honor, are more palatable to people of the Federation. Perhaps the Ferengi remind them too much of their old selves (ie, us)? The Ferengi may seem to violate the basic principles of Federation ethics in a way Klingons et al don't.
This is only my speculation, of course

No speculation required. Riker outright states this in
The Last Outpost.

According to Quark, Ferengi make better humans than humans since they didnt do half the nasty shit we did.

That's true. They never attempted genocide or another species, they never tried to conquer anybody (because you have to feed slaves and if you conquer someone you seem to become financially responsible for them).
Like Ellen Ripley said, "you don't see them screwing each other over for a percentige". Oh wait. They DO do that. Well, we never said they were saints

Not just the Ferengi but the majority of Trek races. Really if you made a show where you had all the minorities act in a one demensional fashion you'd be hung from the higest tree in California. But in Sci-Fi it's ok to have a race of all warriors, merchants, back-stabbers, religious loonies etc as long as your main characters loudly proclaim their tolerance.

And when you do have an individual that acts "out of character" for his species - excepting humans - he is ostracized for it. See Rom.

Don't forget Sybok. Our emotional Vulcan.
Well, at least they didn't push any boundries with, let's say, a pacifistic Klingon.
