US Black AIDS Rates Rival Africa

Post by Aaron »

A dressed link.
LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- The AIDS epidemic among African-Americans in some parts of the United States is as severe as in parts of Africa, according to a report out Tuesday.
"AIDS in America today is a black disease," says Phill Wilson, founder of the Black AIDS institute.

"Left Behind - Black America: A Neglected Priority in the Global AIDS" is intended to raise awareness and remind the public that the "AIDS epidemic is not over in America, especially not in Black America," says the report, published by the Black AIDS Institute, an HIV/AIDS think tank focused exclusively on African-Americans.

"AIDS in America today is a black disease," says Phill Wilson, founder and CEO of the institute and himself HIV-positive for 20 years. "2006 CDC data tell us that about half of the just over 1 million Americans living with HIV or AIDS are black."

Although black people represent only about one in eight Americans, one in every two people living with HIV in the United States is black, the report notes.

Remember all the effort in the eighties that went into AIDS research (you know after people realised it wasn't just killing gays)? WTF ever happened to that?

I think South Park explained it perfectly. AIDS is retro now. Cancer is in.

I think I heard different numbers from yahoo saying only 56,000 new cases in America in the last decade. If there's a million people with it in total I'd say that's a very nice decline in the amount of new cases.

I'm sure you get this to an extent in Canada, also, but in the US it's all about the front page. Since AIDS/HIV new case rates have been declining, it doesn't get the press it used to - and out of sight, out of mins, as they say.

It's all about cancer up here, specifically breast cancer. Cause you know, they might have to cut off the boobies. Incidently, prostate cancer gets about one days worth of recognition. On fathers day.

Reason Prostate Cancer isn't in decline as much as breast. Thankfully though all kinds of cancer are in decline besides maybe skin and brain.

Wow had no idea it was so bad over there. AIDS is almost non existant here.

You don't really hear of it over here, but I'm sure it's around.
It's really telling the the US is in that position.

I remeber reading a few months ago that only one in 10,000 New Zealanders have it, one of the lowest rates in the world.

I think the problem isn't because of race so much as location. Black populations are more centered around cites. Cities are where most desease problems start and build. If this were 100 years ago it would be a nearly all white problem.
