Meteorite strikes, strange sickness follows.

Weird.
LIMA (AFP) - Villagers in southern Peru were struck by a mysterious illness after a meteorite made a fiery crash to Earth in their area, regional authorities said Monday.

Around midday Saturday, villagers were startled by an explosion and a fireball that many were convinced was an airplane crashing near their remote village, located in the high Andes department of Puno in the Desaguadero region, near the border with Bolivia.

Residents complained of headaches and vomiting brought on by a "strange odor," local health department official Jorge Lopez told Peruvian radio RPP.

Seven policemen who went to check on the reports also became ill and had to be given oxygen before being hospitalized, Lopez said.

Rescue teams and experts were dispatched to the scene, where the meteorite left a 100-foot-wide (30-meter-wide) and 20-foot-deep (six-meter-deep) crater, said local official Marco Limache.

"Boiling water started coming out of the crater and particles of rock and cinders were found nearby. Residents are very concerned," he said

The meteorite probably struck and released a pocket of sulfur or some other volcanic gas.

There's a theory that many of the diseases throughout history that have caused mass deaths come from meteor impacts. The Beubonic and Neumonic plagues for example.

Could be phycosimatic.
What does defeat mean to you?

Nothing it will never come. Death before defeat. I don’t bend or break. I end, if I meet a foe capable of it. Victory is in forcing the opponent to back down. I do not. There is no defeat.

Why do we need a theory for those diseases, which already have perfectly plausible, tested, and identifiable transmission methods?

BTW, congrats on the promotion, Monroe.

Ah, when Crichton wrote WITHOUT the sole intention of his books becoming screenplays...

Thanks :)

I didn't say I came up with it its just a theory :P Actually I was doing a report about it in one of my history classes and several medeval villages and cities, including Paris and some in northern Italy reported seeing a meteor in the sky a few days to a few weeks before the disease struck them. I think that's the origin of the theory.

Masters of Horror: The Screwfly Effect is a brilliant TV episode (just one episode on the masters of horror series) that has an alien disease that makes human males not differ sexual arosal from aggression. Its an awesome story and makes me really uncomfortable. Which is what it was going for.

Elliot Gould is a fine actor, and made the 'screwfly effect', emotionally quite scarring

I think the BBC mentioned that several livestock also died. So it's unlikely to be something mental.

I hate how stories like this just disappear without resolution. A few years ago I could have waited a year or so for Horizon to cover it, but now, Horizon reports are all too similar to that YouTube skit linked to above.
