They were not in a wartime condition as the U.S. was in WWII, so the idea of comparing to Pearl Harbor might not be right. I'd think it would be decomissioned or so severely refitted that only the basic spaceframe remained.

Why? The crew died, as far as we know she suffered no damage seeing as they found her in orbit. If one of the US Navy's CVN's entire crew died via a plague, would they waste 4 billion dollars and turn her into a memorial?

Possibly? If it was an entire crew, I'm not so sure. That's a big mark, and again without wartime conditions. Plus, lets be honest, the economics of Trek don't always make sense.

No they don't but TOS was the series with the most consistancy and there was very little mystical BS to justify the decommission position. Lets be honest, a plague is not a legitimate reason to retire the vessel. It can be decontaminated. It only gets mileage if we admit that Starfleet is staffed by wackjobs.

You mean they aren't? :D

However, I agree. It is extremly unlikly that they would do anything other than give her a new crew.

Well post-TOS, yes they are. Kirks era seemed the most sensible.

Definitly. TOS Starfleet was usually sensible. Then they got worse every series.

I could only see it being decommisioned if there had been damage to the spaceframe or serious damage to the power/motive systems. Plague? Decon it and re-staff it.

Ok, I've had a new idea (post morning coffee). Perhaps they may have de-commissioned USS Exeter, then re-commissioned her under a new name. That way, you could properly honer the lost crew, do an Exeter memorial, and still have the ship itself in service.

Likelyhood?

Possible. It would deffinatly be a sign of respect while not wasting resources.

Been done before, I don't see a problem with it.

Edit: In fact modern militaries have a "name-changing ceremony" for things like this.

A very workable solution.

Wait for it...

I suppose its possible, don't really see any problems with it.

:::holding chest::: is this a forum first? Maybe we have a majority opinion on what happened to USS Exeter? :worried: Does that mean the end of the world is around the corner?
