The people who will be killed by those who didn't disarm, and have no intentions of doing so.

I foresee a brisk business in selling lootermobiles if this ever comes to pass.

It was tried during the Cold War, didn't work out so well.

What would the motivation be for folks who murder, rape, and steal constantly to up and disarm? I must be missing the part where those "people" actually care about anything but personal gain and sadistic pursuits.

Oh? I don't remember any nukes being shot off. In fact, both sides have reduced their nuclear arms since then.

There's the potential for good in everyone. Sometimes you just have to dig deep.

That's not what I meant. The Sovets deliberatly dragged their feet reducing their nuclear stockpile, claiming numerous technical problems and went so far to ask for cash and personnel from the US to do it. It's not required for there to be an actual war for disarmament to be a failure you know.

There is but this isn't SW and their not Vader. It sucks but sometimes you just have to do the deed, as was pointed out above by another poster: negotiations were tried to prevent some of the most destructive conflicts in history. Heck even the Yanks tried to negotiate with Saddam (though that seemed more like a facade given the terms they gave him).

Edit: Cleaned it up to try and make a better point.

Uh huh. Maybe if we buy those f*ckhead muslim warlords in the Sudan enough flowers and chocolate, they'll change their minds about slaughtering all of the black africans.

Well, they do have an above average tendency to have technical problems. They're a brilliant bunch in their own right but quality of the finished product is another issue with them.

Yes. However they built the warheads and have to disassemble and rebuild them frequently to keep them working, they shouldn't have had as much trouble as they did. It's rather like North Korea whinging about requiring fuel in exchange for shutting down their reactor, a reactor that doesn't get used for generating power.

Sorry, I blinked and missed the last couple of pages. Blackstar - are you actually saying that you believe that the US, or Canada, should just up and disband their army on the spot?

Sounds like it to me. As an old saying goes: "Pale Ebenezer thought it wrong to fight, but roaring Bill, who killed him, thought it right".
