Agreed, by far the Dark Brotherhood had more atmosphere and personality than almost anything else in Oblivion. Most of Oblivion felt like a traipse through the various settings of Disneyland, with everyone on prozac.
You can only clear out so many caves before you get bored, the combat system is also fairly akward. I do enjoy the game but I usually don't do the main quest unless I feel like having 50 fame points. And the Knights of the Nine expansion sucks hard, though the Shivering Isles is awesome.

I was sorta nonplussed with Oblivion after being such a huge and longterm fan of Morrowind, so I didn't bother to pick up the expansions yet. Did either of them get rid of levelled loot and such? Or did they just add higher end mobs and equipment for post-main questline?

I had Morrowind and lost the third disc. :x

I'm not sure what you mean. Even after the expansion packs all the monsters and loot is scaled with your level. So really there's no point in getting past level 5, unless you get tired of being beat on with steel weapons and want to get hit with Daedric ones.

Yeah that's one of the things I didn't care for too much and tried to get around with mods, but unfortunately, the game just didn't have such a plethora of items as Morrowind did. (OooOOoOooh a bolt of cloth? No one's looking? I'll take it!) I liked that in Morrowind at level 1 you could explore and stumble upon a cave with a daedric cult in it with a daedric sword on a recently bloodied altar surrounded by rubies and gems. In Oblivion it's like okay... I hear mummy sounds, another undead cave with nothing in it, fun...

There is a ruin in Oblivion that if you go in at start and kill the chick inside you can get a free, weightless soultrapping sword. You have to turn the difficulty down pretty far though.

I forget the name of the ruin and quest. It's listed in the Oblivion Wiki though.

Yeah i'm trying to find the Ayleid ruin that contains Umbra. I think she appeared in Morrowind or Daggerfall as well. But i've not played those games.

Just so you know, the sword is weightless until it becomes a quest item. If you never do the quest (it's for a Daedric shrine) than it will be weightless forever. Of course if your using a strength mod than it doesn't matter.

Morrowind might have had a soultrapping sword with a unique name but I don't recall any entertainingly insane orc woman guarding it before.

She's a Bosmer (Wood Elf)

The OblivionWiki says so!

I think she is, she's got the Bosmer (female) voice.
