Star Trek Picard [VFX fixed] - CANON Starfleet arrives!
a bit too much 2370's...i mean ... defiant and sovereign begin to be old as a top player at the end of the 24th century ... but still beautiful

Impressive scene. Especially liked when the intrepid class comes out of warp, you can see its nacelles lower back into impulse engines position.

That would definitely have given me goosebumps. Got 'em right now. Instead we got nondescript ships that add nothing to the STP world. I didn't even go anywhere online for any information regarding those vessels.

I would have liked a little more effort from them. ok the new class, together with some "old", some sovereign, defiant, prometheus ... even galaxy (they would be 30-40 years in picard, certainly not ready for retirement) to play the role excelsiors and miranda classes had in DS9.

I don't think Michael Chabon, or whomever designed that face-off scene, understands how important starships are to the fans and potential fans. I remember after seeing 'First Contact,' I scoured 'Dog-pile' to find out information on those new ships. It led me back to Starshipscemetics.net. If you guys remember what it was like to download even images on 56k modems, well I waited a long time for those schematics of Canon starships to download then immediately saved/printed them out because I was not going to go through that waiting again. Anyway, I was exited to learn about those ships because they were detailed enough, and they did things in the movie that I had to know what they were called. The Akira in particular was even given a unique engine noise, in addition to looking cool, so I did remember it and therefore wanted to know more about it.
Or consider the ships in Discovery. Exactly. They were a mess. I can only picture the Discovery in my mind, the Enterprise because that's iconic, and maybe the Mirrror, Mirror super starship because it had a hole in it. The Klingon vessels are so undefined, I picture them as piles of garbage strung together and sharpened. The only interesting ship is the Klingon burial ship because it is covered in occupied Klingon coffins. There isn't a ship in the new stories that make me want to know more the new universe. In my memory they barely stand out against the background of space. Poor lighting, too much shadows, I don't know what.

I think what it really comes down to is budget. To make a scene like that they would have to either revamp the old CGI models (probably not possible), redo all of the CGI models which are all different, or go with the original route. Create two ship classes that differ from each other slightly which cuts down on cost.
They do have the Enterprise D model so they could have at least used that too though. Would have been cool to see that in the fleet. Maybe the Sovereign class Enterprise E model is still around from Nemesis.
Maybe the scene would have been better with Riker on board a new class of starship that is massive. Turns out it is the lead ship of class the Enterprise F belongs to.
Or hell, Riker pulls Enterprise E out of reserve for this occasion.

Probably ran out of time. CBS desperately wants this All-Access to succeed and there's so many of these services now, while broadcast viewership continues to plummet. Star Trek is CBS' top earner and they're going to ride it to the bank. That's why I discount the budgetary concerns and say that they crammed so much stuff into this show that they ran out of time. Getting streaming shows out at the right time is pivotal now with so much competition. I am guessing at all these thing though. In my mind those ships look like they were copy-pasted onto film. I would have to look really hard at a still image to spot the differences. More ship shapes with less ships ont eh screen would have been ideal.McAvoy wrote: ↑Sat May 23, 2020 8:34 pm I think what it really comes down to is budget. Kit-bashing is missed these days. They could make really unique vessels when they ran out of time and/or budget.
