Re: Cool Picture Thread
Pity they only built six of them too - the original plan was for twelve, but cost overruns and whatnot.
Still, it's a hell of a great ship - and only getting better with time as they add weapons. Since they launched they've picked up CIWS, and now they're getting Harpoon.

CIWS is okay, but seeing a RIM-116 salvo would be interesting. Capable of launching 21 missiles at a time, this means you have to fire 22 to get one past the defenses. CIWS might be able to shoot down more, but if they come in as a salvo, nope.
The other fun would be modifying Stinger SAMs to be fired from a VLS cell. Stingers are about 3 inches wide, and 5 feet long. The VLS cells are ~20 inches wide (RIM-162 can be quad-packed, and there is not enough length to stuff 4 end to end), and 17-25 feet long.
My evil idea:
Set up a comm channel to launch Stinger missiles from a single VLS cell. Each cell can handle a 6x6 array of Stinger missiles, and 3-4 'levels' of them. So a single cell can hold 108-144 Stinger missiles for just defending that one ship. They would be steered by the ship's computer instead of using its own seeker warhead, and only have a range of 2-2.5 miles (some thrust is lost accelerating vertically), compared to the 5 mile range of the RIM-116 engine. But essentially telling whoever is shooting at you that they will need over 100 missiles to get 1 through your defenses is a wonderful feeling.

Oh I am aware of it. My hobby is naval history and technology. Though modern technology is kinda boring so I am more into the pre-1950's tech. Guns and more guns though I do have a interest in carrier design and aircraft.Captain Seafort wrote:Type 45 destroyer. Gucci piece of kit, but it's a pity they decided to cancel the 6.1" gun.

Re: Cool Picture Thread
IIRC, two RAM are fired per target so not quite that many. Though I have a thought that might be just for the Sea-Ram launcher based on the CIWS chassis. Of course, many ships with RAM have two launchers.
Anyway, the Aster-15s are supposed to be doing that job on a 45. That, and I gather they're going to be able to quad-pack Sea Ceptor when they're available.
That would be a whole lot of missiles, but Stinger's not up to much as a SAM.
And I doubt you could stack them vertically. The exhaust from the top missile would be firing down directly onto the next missile at launch. Not a good idea.

What does defeat mean to you?
Nothing it will never come. Death before defeat. I don’t bend or break. I end, if I meet a foe capable of it. Victory is in forcing the opponent to back down. I do not. There is no defeat.

I saw that yesterday sitting at a bar. Probably the only time where I did get into watching soccer.
