I'd just like to point out that, unless Talora is incredibly trusting, you'd be very unlikely to get near any of the ship's systems until it can be confirmed you're a member of the crew.To get busy checking the ship out to prove his competency/fix some stuff.

Just a gun safety comment. Birdshot is extremely lethal and usually messy with a contact shot. At three yards it's still pretty nasty even without a tight choke although there is a fair chance the target will survive the hit and might even keep fighting for a while. The would will look pretty nasty though it just probably won't be much deeper than 4 inches.

I think the point of Blackstar taking the weapon was because it was painful, but not lethal.

Well I don't actually know enough about projectile weapon to even BS my way through a conversation. All I know I learned from reading the Folly. And when Cheney shot his friend in the face. That's about it though.
I guess if birdshot has trouble getting deeper then 4 inches of human, I doubt it could penetrate the station's hull. And I'm sure it wouldn't be as useful against thicker skinned and more agressive species like Klingons or Gorn, but it would make them back off. Except maybe determined Klingons.

Unless the hull happens to be made of paper-maché then I think it's a safe bet.I guess if birdshot has trouble getting deeper then 4 inches of human, I doubt it could penetrate the station's hull.

Actualy, I'd say Gorn would be pretty well protected against Birdshot. The Gorn from The Arena was pretty damn tough. And I'm sure it wouldn't be as useful against thicker skinned and more agressive species like Klingons or Gorn, but it would make them back off. Except maybe determined Klingons.
I wonder what effect it would have on a Laithan's carapace? Given the weakness of the ammunition, I'd say only a headshot would have any chance of hurting one.

The thing with birdshot is that it's ability to penetrate falls off steply as you add range.
A contact shot would punch a carapace just fine (unless you're made out of some kind of funky diamond bio stuff or whatever). However even at one yard it might not depending on thickness. By ten yards a lathain would just have to worry about getting it's eye put out. Even a direct headshot wouldn't kill it outright (assuming a reasonably thick carapace).
Actually by ten yards a human skull might well hold. You'd just have to worry about getting a jugular punctured or having a couple pelets go through the eye.
(Note that I only have direct evendence for long range, contact, and 3 yard shots. Otherwise I'm extrapolating).
At any rate you aren't damaging a respectable hull,

I sent a hail to the ship in my last post. You could bring me on board.
