Some fruity little limey lieutenant from the Napoleonic Wars, whose most impressive achievement was being the inspiration for Dan Abnett's Ibram Gaunt in the Gaunt's Ghosts series of WH40k novels. AKA, he was the protagonist of the series by Bernard Cromwell.

Not knowing who either Chuck Norris OR Sharpe is, surely the one who has become a worldwide phenomenon has to stand for something?

1) He was a Lieutenant for three and a half books out of twenty two - he spent more time as a Captain than any other rank.
2) He was commissioned from the ranks after saving Wellington's life at Assaye, captured an Eagle at Talavera, stormed the central breach at Badajoz and drove off the Imperial Guard at Waterloo.
3) "Little" is a rather odd term to use about a bloke who was a good half a foot taller than the average bloke of his time.

So... he's 6' tall and knows how to pull a trigger? Not really impressive.

I thought he was promoted after saving Gen. Wellesley's life?

That's what you get for trying to be helpful by referring to someone by their best-known title...
