What prompted a lock-down? Can't say I've ever experienced one of them over here. I don't think we even have drills on them.

After the Colombine High School shooting in 1999 having such drills/some type of emergency plan like that became mandatory throughout much of if not all of the U.S.

Exactly. If the gunmen is in the hallway you're just giving them more targets or putting innocents in the way when the police arrive. Also, it's easier to account for everyone if they're not running around screaming...

Plus all the old wood doors have been replaced with fire doors. Three and a half inches of steel and foam. Not easy for rounds to get through. Plus, with the cameras everywhere. If you don't have any students moving around, its a lot easier to track anyone you don't want around.

I find it kinda odd that you practice drills for a gunman in the school...since you'd be telling anyone at the school who would become a gunman, exactly what's going to happen.

Our school has policies and things to do if there's a gunman or some other threat to the school, however they make sure NONE of the students know what they are, so they have the element of surprise should the gunman be a student or have tried to coax the information out of a student.

Hm. I can understand it during a disaster of some sort, but I don't see how it would help if there was a gunman in the school. Surely it'd be better to simply evacuate the school in that instance?

I know it's not a direct correlation, but there was one school where the gunmen pulled the fire-alarms and stood outside the school, shooting people as they walked out.

My wife has had plenty of both lock-down drills and actual lock-downs. Evacuating means possibly parading a bunch of schoolchildren past an aggressor; in addition, the VAST majority of such instances are not a Columbine type deal, but an individual with a specific target - gang initiation, deranged estranged parent, or somesuch. The potential for bringing the target right to the assailant is far outweighed by the fact of keeping the assailant searching long enough to be apprehended by authorities.

Okay, so I can see how a lock-down would be a good idea in certain situations, particularly if the doors are as strong as Deep suggests.

Amusingly, we actually had a real evacuation this morning. Some idiot had left one of the gas nozzles in one of the chemistry labs open, and the gas tripped the sensor. This prompted an evacuation of the entire lab block in case....well, something blew up. There was initialy some confusion amongst the students as to whether or not it was a drill, but I think once they saw the bursar running down the coridor yelling "Get out! Get out! Get out!" they realised it was real.

The only school evacuation we've had was when the gas pipes leading to the canteen burst. I have never seen one of the deputy heads, Mr. Pinney (our equivalent to a bursar, state schools don't have them but Mr. Pinney is not a teacher but an accountant), so panicked.

Today I had the luck of pulling the teacher out of the water, damn that was hard. As I said before, he weighs almost 300 lbs, and my partner probably about 90 at most. But I did it, and am quite confident that I can assist almost anyone out of the water...
