The internet is on the verge of its biggest shake up in 40 years, and the most significant one since it crossed from academia to commerce in 1993. Icann, the organisation that oversees internet domain names, has approved the use of non-Latin characters such as Mandarin, Hindi, Cyrillic and Arabic in web addresses.

Re: Internet to get non-Latin addresses
How does that help? I can't read Mandarin or Arabic, but that Cyrillic and Hebrew is just nonsense.
P.S.: I know you're required to take every opportunity to shill for Mac, but the "bigger keyboard" bit was a joke. Don't tell anyone.![Wink ;)](./images/smilies/icon_wink.gif)

Meh, I can do that on my windows machine fine (after a bit of playing around with fonts). Doesn't matter as I don't understand a bit of them.

Re: Internet to get non-Latin addresses
There's this really nice feature on the upper right part of the screen where you can select which keyboard you want to use. The four that I have on the menu for easy access are US Extended (which contains pretty much every Roman character in the world), Russian (i.e. Cyrillic), Greek and Hebrew, because those are the four alphabets that I can read.Reliant121 wrote:Just out of curiousity, how did you do that? i'm all for macs, but I have never really used all their features well.

Of cause it is as is the mandarin. I'm English, we're actually required by law not to speak or write any other language.Mikey wrote:How does that help? I can't read Mandarin or Arabic, but that Cyrillic and Hebrew is just nonsense.
I'd kinda guessed.P.S.: I know you're required to take every opportunity to shill for Mac, but the "bigger keyboard" bit was a joke. Don't tell anyone.

Re: Internet to get non-Latin addresses
Go to the System Preferences, Language and Text and select 'Input Sources'. I turned on some alternate keyboards and typed away. The Mac will support just about any known language. Including those that run right to left as well as left to right.Reliant121 wrote:Just out of curiousity, how did you do that? i'm all for macs, but I have never really used all their features well.IanKennedy wrote:Or a Mac : 以奖励å¡åˆšåˆš (Mandarin), ستيمبستسيمست تصهتخخشعهسرعشخسيرشخسعخ (Arabic), оылвоывыодвошйцгцшÑтщ (Cyrilic) and ×סלדח×ויוו×ס (Hebrew). Re: Internet to get non-Latin addresses
Not without installing a whole load of language packs. It's not just a matter of fonts. Arabic and Hebrew for example have text that runs from right to left. Plus you need keyboard support for entering the data.stitch626 wrote:Meh, I can do that on my windows machine fine (after a bit of playing around with fonts). Hmm. More Computers than Politics methinks. *punt*

Yeah, I wasn't quite sure whether it was more computers or news.Captain Seafort wrote:Hmm. More Computers than Politics methinks. *punt*
