and the E-E took what looked to be a worse nacelle hit than the "Cause and Effect" impact in Nemesis.
Maybe they decided to actually armour the nacelles on these ships.
About damn time.

1) The USS Valiant was a Defiant Class Ship controlled by a bunch of cadets that went off to go kill a Dominion Battleship, but themselves destroyed trying to destroy it.

I like the old style ships. They seem to have a bit more, I dunno, scale about them. The refit Enterprise in Star Trek II looks amazing, much more like a Naval vessel then the newer ships. And I can't imagine a Sovereign and an Akira class ship duking it out in a Nebula looking half as good as the Enterprise and Reliant. Or a Galaxy vs Nebula class for that matter.

I will always love the design of the COnnie. She's a beauty to me, a white-hulled angel that pushed forth the boundaries of the Federation and looked damned good doing it too.

I don't think you can argue that the Connie could take more Joules of energy in damage. But there might be something to the notion that it's more 'rugged'. It seems like the E-D takes every bit of actual hull damage very seriously. By the time things inside the hull are starting to be destroyed, the E-D is already in deep hot water.

The refit Connies and Mirandas, however, seem to take a direct hit on the warp core to actually cause catastrophic damage.

I think it reflects a different design strategy, most of all. Connie corridors looked to have serious compartmentalization, and the hull seemed to be well armored, for the time. The E-D, on the other hand, was built much more like a civilian ship on the actual structural level. A civilian ship with seriously powerful shields and weapons strapped on, but a civilian ship, optimized for civilian applications like diplomacy and science. The damage that the E-E and Defiant were seen to take would presumably indicate a return to the more rugged standards for those designs.

I think you are right on target, Jordanis. Obviously the GCS would handily win a one-on-one vs. the Connie, but the Connie seemed RELATIVELY more survivable based on contemporary weapons; plus, she could go on with worse hull damage.

Thanks guys for the interesting welcome. Teaos, I am glad you didn't take my comment the wrong way. You are in no way a dufus.

But yeah the SIF is very important for any starship. But I am sure you already so I won't bore you with the details as to why. Besides it's the wrong thread for it.

Jordanis I feel you are spot on in your observations. I have always like the Constitutions because it has the feel of what I liked in a starship. A rugged design that can hold it's own. The "luxury" classes such as the Galaxy class, always struck me as somewhat out of place in what starship design is supposed to be. It reminds me of more of a civilian ship run by federation crew and as such never even took it seriously as a Federation starship.
