New Darwin award winner!

Post by Mikey »

James Looney (no, really) shot himself in the head... while teaching his girlfriend gun safety.

The story.

Now, I'm certainly no expert in the usage of firearms... but safety or not, isn't putting a gun up to your eyeball and pulling the trigger generally on the "not to do" list?

BTW - it's not mentioned in the article but the radio story this morning said, surprisingly, that local police believed that alcohol may have been involved.

Yeah pretty much. Even if I did feel the need to look down the barrel the gun would be empty, the chamber clear, and my finger no where near the trigger. Proving the safeties work by loading the gun and then trying to fire it at your head is beyond idiotic. You never point a loaded gun at anything you don't want to destroy/kill regardless of whether or not the safety is on.

Right - I pretty much guessed that killing stuff on the business end was sort of the whole point of a gun. Hence the nomination in the OP title. ;)

You should be looking down the barrel at least twice every time you handle the weapon* - how else would you know the chamber was clear? :P

*From the breech, obviously.

I've never even touched a gun but I know that.

Reminds me of a Las Vegas Metro Police Sergeant I knew. He had just picked up a new piece (a 9mm Baby Eagle), and was showing it off. He was sitting with his feet up on the conference room table, and wanted to demonstrate it's smooth action. So he dropped the mag, thumbed off the saftey, and drew a bead on the most convienent target available....his own foot. From what the witnesses told me his pinkie toe didn't just get blown off so much as it liquified.

At least he only shot himself. Anyone who treats guns that way is a danger to everyone.

Umm... hello? I've never picked up a gun in my life. But dropping the mag wouldn't clear the round in the chamber, would it? I want to confirm that before I make fun of the guy.
