Rome: Total Realism
I'm sure a lot of us here have played Rome: Total War. And I'm sure plenty of us have noticed that it's not exactly very accurate when it comes to realism. A few months ago I stumbled across this mod for the game, devoted to increasing the realism of the game. And there're a hell of a lot of changes:
The map has been expanded massively. You can now journey quite far east, and a bit further north and south.
There are a lot more settlements. IIRC, on the order of 150.
The three Roman factions have been condensed into one: the Roman Republic.
There are a few new factions.
The units for each faction have been completely re-designed.
Armies are no longer colour-coded for each faction.
Each faction has a bunch of new units, while others have been removed.
Each faction has a load of new buildings, while some have been removed.
Egypt in particular has been completely re-made into the Ptolemic Empire.
There are no longer any "super" factions, that have a massive advantage over all others at the start. Whatever faction you play as, you're in for a challenge.
Completely new system for recruiting troops.
If you liked the original R:TW game, I'd strongly suggest having a look at this. It's a hefty download, but you're getting what is effectively a new game, and it's certainly worth it.

Re: Rome: Total Realism
I've been thinking about playing this whenever I get back into Rome TW (last time was around February) Problem is, you can't play the original game if you have realism installed. And Rome Total War is one of my favorite games ever, so I don't want to screw it up with mods. And really only the realism mod catches my eye. Sure I've downloaded maps like the 65k phalanx people battle and that was fun but far as mods go there's not a whole lot out there. The LOTR looks okay but hey there's games for that already.
So basically I just never installed it cause I didn't want to take the risk of it destroying Rome for me. And besides I don't want to lose my saved games.

Or just copy your saved games and move them elsewhere.
Trust me, it's worth it.

Re: Rome: Total Realism
Install it to another directory and just patch that install with the realism patch. Boom, one legit copy and one modded.

So for those of us who aren't very good at using computers, how would this work? The two saves thing I mean.

Re: Rome: Total Realism
How to save your saved games, do you mean?
Step 1: Go into wherever you have R:TW installed and snoop around.
Step 2: Find where your saved games are.
Step 3: Copy the folder that those games are in.
Step 4: Set up a new folder somewhere on your computer. It must not be within the R:TW folder.
Step 5: Paste the copied folder into the new location.
When you remove/mod R:TW, you'll usualy have your saved games deleted. With this method there's a copy of all your saves lying around. So if you want to re-install standard R:TW, simply copy/paste those saved games back into the file they're supposed to be in.

Or run the installer a second time. When it asks where to install change the name of the destination folder. Instead of C:/RTW have it install in C:/RTW2 or something like that. Boom, second install. Just make sure you have a link to each .exe file on your desktop so you can control which copy you boot up.

Most of the time, if you run the installer again, it runs the uninstaller. Though I can't speak of this game specifically.Tyyr wrote:Or run the installer a second time. It will depend on the game, however I've got a couple on my HD that it brings up options re-install, repair, or uninstall.

Without any option to change the install directory? Weird.

Re: Rome: Total Realism
Yeah I honestly don't recall the last time I ran into a program that gave you no other options with the installer but to uninstall.
